The Confessions of a Control Freak

Growing up, I had to deal with an angry and controlling family. I became hypervigilant and a control freak over myself.

Angry controlling people seek to control by being mean to some and overly favoring others; scapegoats and golden-ones.

Control freaks try to control people who hurt them, by trying to fix those people. They try to reason with them and to appease them, and can be overly nice, in hopes of gaining kindness.

Being a control freak, in control of your own life is a good thing. However, the problem comes when trying to get a person to stop hurting you. It is better to simply adjust your boundaries with that person and maybe let it be known, you don't like what happened.

There is no way to reason with or to appease unreasonable people with misplaced anger, for which they do not take responsibility. Scripture speaks on anger in three very specific ways. Search it: Be slow to anger. Don't sin in your anger. Don't let the sun go down on your anger. Today, I only seek to fix me, to take care of my health and happiness, which go hand-in-hand.

 We've Only Just Begun

We were in our early twenties in 1983, when we married on the first day of Spring, at 3:00, in a little upstate New York church. I remember it all well. I was a princess. He was my prince. We even sang together at our reception. Our honeymoon was perfect.

But when the honeymoon was over, the fighting began. We were like most every other couple. We would love like crazy, but we would also fight like crazy. Things did, however, change. They had to change. We became old people, seniors, over-the-hill, next in line to go.

We enjoyed raising two kids. Then came the empty-nest and letting go, him first, then me. Once I too, fully let go, it was like a door opened, and it was a beautiful sunny day outside. And my husband was out there waiting for me. It was just the two of us again.

He still gets up, goes to work every day, and comes home to me and a clean home, etc. He likes to pitter, garden, and watch TV. I like my hobbies, music, and many cookbooks. Together, we like a nice dinner and a couple games of backgammon and catching up a bit. Our sweetest times can be watching an old sitcom on the couch with our dog, Coti there.

We were two individuals who came together to be one entity. We did not lose our identities, nor did either of us morph into the other. We stumbled till we learned to respect our other half. Our young love grew into a mature love over many years. It was and is work. But we made it. Our goal is to enjoy today and dream of tomorrow. In so many ways, we've only just begun
